Senior Engineer, Query Planner
Own the part of Basalt that decides how every query runs, and make plans cheaper, steadier and faster to choose.
About the role
Own the part of Basalt that decides how every query runs, and make plans cheaper, steadier and faster to choose. You will join a small team that ships weekly, writes things down and shares the on-call load fairly.
What you will do
Design, build and operate the systems your team owns, end to end.
Write design docs and review your teammates' work with care.
Talk directly to customers when they are stuck, and turn what you learn into product.
Take a fair share of on-call, which pages about twice a month.
What we look for
Several years doing this kind of work, with examples you can talk about in depth.
The habit of measuring before changing things, and of explaining why.
Clear written English. Most of our decisions start as a document.
Kindness under pressure.
How we hire
A 30-minute call with the hiring manager, a paid four-hour project you keep, and a conversation with two future teammates. We reply to every application within two weeks.

A CV and a few honest lines are enough. A person on the query engine team reads every application and replies within five working days.
